Everything You Want to Know About a Remodel But Are Too Afraid to Ask

How long it takes, what the money is doing, why the schedule moved, and what a good contractor should be telling you without being asked.

Most people remodel a house once or twice in their life, which means they are asked to make large decisions in an unfamiliar process. Here are the questions clients apologise for asking, which are in fact the right ones.

How long will it take?

Longer than the internet says and shorter than your neighbour claims. A kitchen is not a weekend, a whole-house remodel is not a month. What matters more is whether you were given a real schedule at the start and whether you are told promptly when something changes.

Why is the estimate structured this way?

An estimate should be a comprehensive outline of the project, detailing all the elements involved, rather than a single number with no working. If you cannot see what a line covers, ask. A contractor who is uncomfortable explaining their own estimate is telling you something useful.

What happens when something unexpected turns up?

In an older house, something will. Rot behind the siding, a beam that was notched by a previous owner, wiring nobody should have installed. The process should be the same every time: stop, explain, price the options in writing, and get your decision before proceeding.

Can I live in the house during the work?

Sometimes. It depends on the scope, whether the kitchen and bathrooms stay operational, and your tolerance for dust and noise. It is a conversation worth having honestly before the work starts rather than in week three.

What should I be told without asking?

Who is on site and what they are doing. What happens next week. Anything that affects the budget or the date, at the moment it is known rather than at the moment it becomes unavoidable.
